The Bentonite Laboratory

Bentonite clay will be used as buffer material in the final repository. It will serve as mechanical support for the canister, reduce rock movement effects on the canister and minimise water flow over the deposition holes.

Bentonite pellets

The Bentonite Laboratory is in close vicinity of Äspö HRL. Here large scale tests concerning the properties of the bontonite, methods for installing the copper canister and back filling of deposion tunnels are carried out.
