Research conducted by the SKB

The investigations into constructing a final repository for spent nuclear waste have resulted in a vast amount of data. Research has been conducted since the mid-1970s. The objective has been to build up a general knowledge about the conditions in the bedrock, to find a possible location and to isolate the spent nuclear waste in copper canisters. The data is stored in the SKB database SICADA. Research is divided into three main research categories:

  • Technology development
  • Safety assessment and natural science research
  • Social science research
