Background
Swedish Nuclear Fuel and Waste Management (SKB) is responsible for the management and disposal of Sweden’s radioactive waste. One important part of this work is the design and construction of a deep geological repository. SKB has decided to apply for a permit to build a final repository in Östhammar municipality. Still all research in connection to the development of a final repository is carried out in the Äspö Hard Rock Laboratory (HRL) and the Canister Laboratory in the municipality of Oskarshamn. SKB has a need to secure competence and carry out further research defined by the RD&D programme.
In the municipality of Oskarshamn there are a number of big industries connected to energy production. Nova Center for University Studies Research and Development is an academic platform managing higher education, research and business development and is part of the municipality of Oskarshamn.
Nova FoU (Nova R&D) is a platform for research, development and education supported by Oskarshamn municipality and SKB. Nova FoU is part of Nova Center for University Studies Research and Development.
Aim
The aim of the platform is to broaden the use of the SKB facilities, competence and data and use this as the base for external, new and innovative research and development projects. The aim is to facilitate spin-off effects from research and to make use of this in the trade and industry of the Oskarshamn region.
Organisation
SKB and the municipality of Oskarshamn are both active in managing and developing the platform through the Steering Committee. The Steering Committee consists of two members from each organisation and one member from the academy. The management running the ongoing work of the platform is placed under Nova Center for University Studies Research and Development and its rector.
